Light up every student with Lightbot...

Figuratively and not literally. Lightbot is a coding program that allows students to have fun while learning through games. This program provides two sources of creativity for students to further develop their skill set..three if you count the simplistic designs of the robots. Coding is not the simplest skill to learn but with Lightbot, it can be.

Lightbot takes away the confusing dots, colons, dashes, brackets, and slashes to bring you a game that teaches you to code using clear pictures and guides.

Cross Curriculum Priorities and General Capabilities:

The program Lightbot covers sustainability relative to the use case being used. Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are the three main general capabilities that are being covered with this program. However, the remaining four capabilities can be applied depending on how Lightbot is used.

Predominantly would be used during any S.T.E.M block or any lesson that involves the use of digital technology.

A Classroom Activity using this Resource:

Lightbot can be used as an introductory lesson into the world of coding. It will allow students to explore the game while working out the mechanics of coding. To ensure that students do not stray off tangent, set the tutorial levels as a requirement before they can begin exploring the different level. This will provide the basic understandings of the coding that is used within the program. Once students have completed the tutorial stages, they may pair up to tackle the harder levels.

How to use this Resource:

For Teachers
Using the link for the browser version of the program, teachers can demonstrate the different coding for Lightbot and the actions of each code. Using some of the tutorials as a whole class demonstration will also allow students to follow along if they are confused.

The app will need to be downloaded to the appropriate devices if an interactive device is required (Ipad, Tablet).

For Students
Students will simply need to open up the app on the device that they are using and start straight away. For those using a laptop, they will need to input the URL link into the browser they are using and activate flash accordingly.

  1. This resources is fantastic for showing students how to code. The resource is engaging and is well scaffolded for students and their learning. This can easily be turned into a unit of work that is relevant to sequencing. This resource can also be linked to Mathematics as students can learn about the Cartesian Plain and grid coordinates, as well as art as it can link into isometric designs.

  2. Great resource for beginners! The resource itself is effective, as well as simple to use and will allow for all genders to feel as if they can join in with the activity. I like that you have set out your information in a way which is easy to read and is to the point.
